Elizabeth Higgs Farmer

MILLEDGEVILLE — Elizabeth Higgs Farmer, 90, died peacefully of old age in Knoxville, Tenn., Friday, Nov. 22.

Services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25 at the chapel of Moores Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Louisville City Cemetery.

Born in Martin, Tenn., “Lib” – as many knew her – would move around the world before settling down in Milledgeville. She served as a Navy wife, raising three children at bases scattered along the US coastlines, even spending a few years in Morocco.

Mrs. Farmer studied business at the University of Tennessee Martin, but education would become her professional passion. She worked for the Baldwin County Board of Education and Georgia College and State University. Her volunteer time went to Mary Vinson Memorial Library and – for 30 years – the First United Methodist Church of Milledgeville.

Her marriage to a Navy pilot began just as World War II came to a close. She and Lewis Turner Farmer Jr. celebrated 60 years together before his death in 2006.

Like many homemakers of the time she enjoyed sewing, needlework and cooking. She was a member of many garden clubs. Flowers would become a symbol of affection in the Farmer house.

A thorn on the stem of a freshly-cut rose permanently paralyzed her pointer finger. Her devoted husband continued to bring roses from their well-tended garden, but he removed the thorns from then on. In the same way, they taught their family to enjoy the roses of life, even among the thorns.

Mrs. Farmer is survived by three children and their spouses:

Lewis Turner Farmer III and wife Carol; grandson, David Criswell; Richard Warren Farmer and wife Sharon; grandchildren, Emily Farmer, Blake and Moriah Farmer, Grant and Megan Farmer; Barbara Farmer Scott and husband, Ronnie; grandchildren, Jeff Jordan, Kristin and Tony Tofanelli, Kelly Scott, Tyler, Savannah and Sydalee Scott.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made in Elizabeth’s memory to the Turner Farmer Sunday School Class, First United Methodist Church, Milledgeville.

Visit to express tributes.

Moores Funeral Home & Crematory has charge of arrangements.
