Dr. Calvin L. Davis obit

MILLEDGEVILLE — Funeral services for Dr. Calvin Leroy Davis were held Saturday, June 8, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in Eatonton. Interment was on Monday, June 10, 2013, at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville.

Dr. Davis was born in Columbus, Ga., on June 15, 1928, to the late Edward Lawrence and Margaret James Floyd Davis. He entered the Army in 1945. He spent 22 years in the military before retiring having received countless medals, most notably the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star of Valor. On his last tour of duty, MSGT Davis was assigned to Korea for the second time. While there he built and pastored Tongduchon Baptist Church near Camp Casey and coordinated countless interventions on behalf of the affiliated orphanage. He was a graduate of Georgia State University, received his law degree from John Marshall Law School as well as a Doctorate of Laws. Ultimately he committed his life to the service of Jesus Christ. His began his ministry as the associate pastor, music and youth director at Candler Park Baptist Church in Atlanta. He was ordained as a minister of the gospel at Candler Park. While in Atlanta he taught at Bass High School and was assigned to Georgia State University as the ROTC instructor. He organized and directed the GSU Cadet Choir. His next position was as the associate missionary and camp director of Flint River Baptist Association. He was then called to Rehoboth Baptist Church in Griffin as the pastor. He later pastored Macedonia Baptist Church in Manchester, Oakland Baptist Church in Warner Robins, Oak Grove Baptist Church in Gainesville, and  then back to Griffin at Grace Baptist. In Retirement, he pastored Lake Shore Community Church in Eatonton and continued to fill pulpits in various churches where needed. He was, and his wife currently is, a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Eatonton.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Wade Davis of Eatonton; daughters, Tracie Penland of Eatonton and Dr. Toni (Dr. Robert Earl) Meeks of Fayetteville, N.C.; son, Dennis Clemons (Judy Clemons) of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; grandchildren, Bryan Hinkle, Terry Hinkle, Brent Hinkle, Haywood Meeks, Kimberly Clemons, Denny Clemons; great-grandchildren, Ayden Penland, Bryce Hinkle, Brady Hinkle and Tyler Hinkle; and a number of cherished relatives, nieces and nephews.
