Phillip D. Giles obit

MILLEDGEVILLE — Phillip D. Giles, Haddock/ Milledgeville, b. 3/12/1950, passed away on Aug. 9, 2013. Memorial services will be held on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. in the Williams Funeral Home Chapel of Milledgeville. The family will recieve friends on Thursday from 5:30 p.m. until the service hour.

Mr. Giles, a self-described "Simpleman," "Countryboy," and "Dinosaur" loved country music, especially Hank Williams Jr. and other outlaws. Phillip graduated from Baldwin County High School in 1968 and attended Southern Technical Institute and the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he studied architecture and civil engineering. He was a lifelong, die-hard fan of Georgia Tech, the Ramblin' Wreck and the Yellow Jackets. He also attended Georgia College where he studied business and public administration. He degreed in life because, "A Country boy can Survive." He owned and operated several businesses during his life including Baldwin Printing & Supply Company, Creative Tees, Kolortex Screen Printing, a grocery in Haddock, GA., and All Georgia Inspections. He also performed independent contracting work designing businesses, homes and churches, and surveying land. Additionally, he split and delivered firewood and catered barbecue and Brunswick stew.

Following "family tradition," Phillip followed in the footsteps of his father, Sammie, who constructed or renovated many buildings in Milledgeville and the surrounding area, and his grandfather, Sammie, who constructed roads and bridges, including the old Milledgeville/Macon Road, by designing many local businesses such as Joiners Market, Shrimp Boat and Choby's Landing Restaurants, Baldwin Church of Christ and the addition to First Baptist Church.

He also laid out several local subdivisions including Port Armour and Reynolds Plantation on Lake Oconee. Additionally, he designed Oconee Springs Park and Camp Manipines on Lake Sinclair.

Phillip provided extensive assistance to the Milledgeville Main Street Program and the Historical Commission by assisting in the design and rehabilitation of numerous historical buildings. His son, Phil Jr., and his brother, Mike, carry on the construction tradition in their businesses. There are few businesses, buildings, or pieces of land in the Milledgeville area that have not been touched or influenced by Giles hands.

Phillip was employed by the Oconee Area Planning & Development Commission where he assisted in the design and implementation of the first county-wide house numbering and address system in Georgia for Baldwin and Putnam County; set-up, implemented, and kept updated the district voting system for Milledgeville/Baldwin County; designed water and sewer systems for cities in the seven counties served; and designed the "Dogwood Bike Trail System" for Baldwin County, with bike trail standards that are still being used statewide.

Phillip continued to maintain the county-wide address system while he was employed by the Baldwin County Tax Assessors Office as a property tax appraiser and member of the Board of Assessors. He also assisted in the setup of the E911 system for Baldwin County.

Phillip was an active member of the Milledgeville Jaycees in his "younger days" and served in state and local offices. The construction of Camp Manipines by the Jaycees and The Toys for Tots project were sources of pride. Phillip enjoyed cemetery research and single-handedly compiled the first directory of cemeteries in Baldwin County complete with an index of all tombstone inscriptions. He shared his research freely, seeking no profit. Phillip had a big heart and would help those in need any way he could. He was a friend to many without regard to status or color.

Phillip D. Giles was born in McRae, Ga. He was predeceased by grandparents, Samuel Luke Giles and Laura Etta Brown Giles, Jake Holiday Dunlap and Berta Lashley Dunlap; and parents, Sammie Luke Giles and Hoyle Mae Dunlap Giles.

He is survived by his brother Mike Giles (Donna), sons Phillip (Phil Jr.) Shane Giles (Tina) and David M. Giles; grandchildren, Carmen Michelle Giles, Gavin Giles, Kamren Giles and Jordan Giles; ex-wife Kim Kingston; and significant other, Susan Lemme.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to your favorite charity or that you pay it forward and assist someone who needs a helping hand. Express online condolences at www.williamsfuneralhome.net
