Daniel Dickens Smith obit

MILLEDGEVILLE — Mr. Daniel Dickens Smith, 82, passed away on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013. Graveside funeral services were conducted Monday, October 21, 2013 at 11 a.m. in Sparta City Cemetery with the Rev. Billy Hargrove and the Rev. Darrell McGinnis officiating.

The family received friends at Sparta City Cemetery from 10:30 a.m. until the service hour.

Mr. Smith was a native of Sparta. He was the son of the late Wendell White Smith Sr. and Ruby Dickens Smith and was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Elder.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Korean Conflict in Japan. He was a past commander of the V.F.W. of Hancock County and a member of the American Legion.

Mr. Smith loved gardening and working in his yard to share his plants and vegetables with friends. He was a member of Pierce Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors include sisters, Barbara Griffin and Jean Davis, both of Sparta; brother, Wendell Smith of Milledgeville; and a number of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.
