Calvin Davis obit

LAKE OCONEE — Funeral services for Dr. Calvin Leroy Davis, will be held Saturday, June 8, 2013, at 1 p.m. at Friendship Baptist Church in Eatonton. Interment will be on Monday, June 10, 2013, at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Milledgeville.

The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday immediately following the service.

Dr. Davis was born in Columbus, Ga., to the late Edward Lawrence and Margaret James Floyd Davis and entered the U.S. Army in 1945. He spent 22 years in the Army before retiring having received countless medals most notably the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star of Valor. On his last Tour of Duty, MSGT Davis was assigned to Korea for the second time. While there he built and pastured TongduChong Baptist Church and an orphanage choir near Camp Casey, Korea. After retiring from the Army, he was associate pastor, music director and youth director at Candler Park Baptist Church in Atlanta where he was ordained as a minister.

While there he taught at Bass High School and was assigned to Georgia State University where he was the ROTC instructor, and he organized and directed the cadet choir. He next was the associate missionary and camp director of Flint River Baptist Associating leading him to Rehoboth Baptist Church of Griffin which was the first church he pastured. He later pastured Macedonia Baptist Church of Manchester moving to Oakland Baptist Church of Warner Robins. He was then called to pastor at Oak Grove Baptist Church of Gainsville before retiring once again. In retirement, he pastured Lake Shore Community Church in Eatonton and continued to fill in at the pulpit in various churches where needed. He and his wife were most currently members of Friendship Baptist Church in Eatonton.

He is survived by his wife, Thelma Wade Davis of Eatonton; daughters Tracie Penland of Eatonton and Dr. Toni (Dr. Robert Earl) Meeks of Fayetteville, N.C.; son, Dennis Clemons of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; grandchildren, Bryan Hinkle, Terry Hinkle, Brent Hinkle, Haywood Meeks, Kimberly Clemons, Denny Clemons; great-grandchldren, Ayden Penland, Bryce Hinkle, Brady Hinkle, Tyler Hinkle; and a number of other relatives and nieces and nephews.
