MILLEDGEVILLE — Mr. George Edwin Cook Jr., 86, passed away Thursday, Dec. 19, 2013.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, at Sparta Baptist Church with the Rev. Alan McCoy officiating. Burial will follow at Baldwin Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Cook was a native of Rahway, N.J. but had made his home in Sparta for more than 60 years. He played Minor League Baseball with the Georgia State League and the Florida State League. He worked for the Sparta Furniture Manufacturing Company and was a member and Deacon of Sparta Baptist Church and taught Sunday school for more than 50 years. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Donna Cook Griffith. Mr. Cook was a founding member and trustee of John Hancock Academy. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army.

Survivors include his wife Barbara Cook of Sparta; a son, Edwin Cook (Karen) of Macon; a daughter, Janet McCrary (Gray) of Albany; four grandchildren, Katie Wall, Kevin McCrary, Morgan Cook and Madison Cook; one great-grandchild, Matthew Wall; and two nephews.

Friends who wish may make contribution to the Sparta Baptist Church or John Hancock Academy.

The family will receive friends Friday from 6 until 8 p.m. at Moores Funeral Home.
