Lt. Col. Carl Hamilton Bell Jr. (Ret.), age 89, died Thursday, May 1, 2008.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday, May 5, at the chapel of Moores Funeral Home. Burial with full military honors will follow at Baldwin Memorial Gardens.
Lt. Col. Bell, a native of Decatur, made his home in Milledgeville for many years. He retired from the United States Army after more than 30 years of service, ending his Army career as professor of military science and commandant of cadets at Georgia Military College. He served in World War II, Korea, and the Dominican Republic. Following a second career, he retired from Central State Hospital after 18 years of service. Lt. Col. Bell was an active Boy Scout leader throughout his life and a recipient of the prestigious Silver Beaver award. He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Hamilton Bell Sr. and Bernice Agnes Sherrod Bell, and by his wife, Anne Betts Bell. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his four sons, Carl H. Bell III of Marietta, George Steven Bell of Winterville, N.C., William R. Bell of San Antonio, Texas, and Michael F. Bell of Heath Springs, S.C.; 10 grandchildren, Anthony Grant Bell of Woodstock, Anne Marie Naugle of Brunswick, Samuel Bart Bell of Abilene, Texas, James Steven Bell of Winterville, N.C., Christopher Paul Bell of Charlottesville, Va., 1st Lt. Daniel Robert Bell of Fort Benning (currently serving in Iraq), David Martin Bell of San Antonio, Texas, Joshua Jordan Bell of Heath Springs, S.C., Kendra M. Bell of Heath Springs, S.C., and Jack Hamilton Bell of Heath Springs, S.C.; four great-grandchildren, Ashlyn M. Bell of Woodstock, Jacob G. Bell of Woodstock, Eric F. Naugle II of Brunswick, and Cole Hamilton Naugle of Brunswick.
The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour Monday at Moores Funeral Home.
