DALTON — Shaw Industries Group Inc., is closing its plants in Calhoun and Valdosta which will idle about 600 workers.
The Dalton-based carpet manufacturer said Tuesday layoffs will start in the next five to six weeks. Employees were informed about the closing.
Company executives blamed the closure on "unprecedented difficulties" in the housing industry.
Al Scruggs, human resources director, said the company will offer affected workers severance packages and outplacement assistance.
Shaw is the world's largest maker of carpets.
