Mayors want deputies to stop patrolling 3 cities

WINDER

The mayors of Auburn, Statham and Winder have asked Barrow County leaders to stop sheriff's office patrols in their cities.

The Barrow County Mayors Association has asked county commissioners to reduce property taxes in all three cities by the amount it costs for the sheriff's office to patrol and investigate crimes there.

Police departments in all three cities have primary jurisdiction within their city limits. All three departments receive help from the sheriff's office.

Commissioners will consider the proposal at a meeting Tuesday, but they don't expect to make a final decision at that time.
