The Christmas holiday weekend proved deadlier than Georgia Department of Public Safety had predicted.

Seventeen people lost their lives in vehicular mishaps between 6 p.m. Friday and midnight Monday. The state predicted 13 deaths on the state’s roadways during those 78 hours. The state reported 11 deaths during the 2005 Christmas holiday travel time.

Jones County Sheriff Office reported one fatality. None were reported in the Milledgeville area.

Weather may have been a factor in the number of accidents and fatalities this season, said GSP public information officer Larry Schnall

“Weather may have contributed to some of the fatal crashes, but we are still reviewing the reports to determine how many,” Schnall said. “The wet roadways and people not slowing down, not wearing safety restraints and the DUI related crashes appear to be the contributing factors.”
