As Sen. Johnny Grant prepares for the 2007 General Assembly, the second-term senator from Milledgeville is anticipating lawmakers facing tough decisions on health care and the state’s antiquated tax system.

Lawmakers have their work cut out for them in reducing the number of uninsured Georgians, Grant said.

“There needs to be a lower number of uncompensated health care which is a difficulty for hospitals and other health care,” Grant said.

The number of uninsured Georgians continues to increase, and the disparity is not only in those who do not work, but in working families as well.

“Many cannot afford private health care insurance and are not eligible for Medicaid or Medicare,” Grant said. “Citizens going without health care in the long run can be more expensive for the state as well.”

PeachCare for Kids, a comprehensive health care program for uninsured children living in Georgia because of cuts at the national level, Grant warns.

Legislators are hoping the U.S. Congress addresses the matter soon, he said.
