It’s turtle time once again in Milledgeville.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Oconee has begun its annual fundraiser to benefit the organization’s youth mentoring efforts in Baldwin, Hancock, Putnam, Washington and Wilkinson counties. This year’s event, “Turtle Town,” will give three lucky ticket holders an opportunity to win $500, $1,000 and $2,500 respectively, while 325 ticket holders will have an opportunity to roll dice for a chance to win $25,000.

“It’s a new event that’s taking the place of the Tour de Turtle,” Karen Oakes, executive director of BBBS, said.

While Oakes and her staff have held the Tour de Turtle at the river bridge off of Hancock Street, sending thousands of tiny turtles floating down the river into waiting nets, possible construction related to projects with the Oconee River Greenway Authority have prevented them from staging on the site. This year’s fundraiser will instead be held at the Milledgeville Mall in August.

“Everyone’s name will go into a big pot, and we’ll draw out 325 names,” Oakes said. “Starting Saturday, Aug. 5, we’ll draw 100 names. We’ll draw another 100 names each Saturday after that, and on the date of the event, we will draw an additional 25 names.”
