State's top female golfer signs with Clemson

MILLEDGEVILLE — Georgia's best female junior golfer chose Clemson University over countless other pursuers. Ashlan Ramsey, a John Milledge Academy senior, will join her older sister Taylor for the Tigers' inaugural competitive season next fall.

Ramsey was heavily recruited by many NCAA Division I schools like Georgia, Arizona, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M to name a few. Clemson head women's golf coach John Thomas (J.T.) Horton sent a statement regarding Ramsey's pedigree describing her as a “true five-star recruit.”

The JMA golfer verbally committed to the start up program more than a year ago. Playing with her sister was always a dream.

“It's good to finalize it and get it down on paper that I'm actually going,” Ramsey said. “It sunk in a little bit today because I've been committed for so long.”

Ramsey said she is looking forward to getting better everyday under Horton's expertise.

Clemson, S.C. isn't too far away from home either.

JMA's golf standout played 16 nationally ranked junior and amateur events in 2012. To say she went on a tear is an understatement.

Ramsey won the Sea Pines Junior Heritage, Georgia Junior PGA Championship and the Joe Cheves Invitational among seven other top 10s.

The state's top junior female embraced the moment at USGA events over the summer highlighted by a runner-up finish in the Women's Amateur Public Links Championship. Ramsey also made the round of 16 at the U.S. Girls Junior for the second straight year.

She gives thanks to JMA's flexibility that provided a discernible competitive advantage. The support trickles down from faculty to students.

The future Clemson star uses the AJGA Leadership Links program to raise money for The Hunter Renfroe Fund through Birdies-For-Charity donations and pledges. Currently, $1,200 has been collected and presented.

More summer pledges are incoming, and Ramsey will continue Birdies for Charity next year.
