Seventh-ranked GMC returns home this weekend

MILLEDGEVILLE — Earning its fourth straight win of the season last weekend, the third on the road this fall, seventh-ranked Georgia Military College returns home Saturday to take on Arkansas Baptist College at Davenport Field.

Sitting at 2-2 on the season, the up-and-coming Arkansas Baptist squad will bring a young, confident group to the Bulldogs’ backyard.

“Arkansas Baptist is 2-2 and much improved from past years,” Bert Williams, head coach, said. “They have the same head coach, but he’s got some good young coaches on his staff.”

According to Williams, the Buffaloes have proven on film that they will not be a team to overlook for GMC.

“They’re just playing good, sound offense and defense. They look really good on film,” he said. “We’ve got to get ready to play a team on the rise. They’re going to come in and give us all we want I’m sure.”

With the Bulldogs facing a tough road ahead, Williams said the team must be more disciplined when it comes to protecting the football and penalties.

“I think the biggest thing we’ve done is have penalties and turnovers,” he said. “That’s a frustrating thing as a coach to have to deal with all that, but we’ve got to get better at it.”

The seasoned head coach believes his players have to transfer what they are doing in practice to the game-situations.

“We cannot lose focus on protecting the football,” Williams said. “We’ve been doing a better job in practice, but we’ve got to maintain focus in the game.”

Without Joe Harris on the offensive line and Akeem Judd at tailback for the second week in a row, the GMC coaching staff has challenged the Bulldogs to step up their game this week, and Williams believes they will.
