UR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Chambers leads Lady Trojan soccer

MILLEDGEVILLE — While the season has been a difficult one for the John Milledge Academy girls’ soccer team, they wrapped up their regular season on a positive note with junior forward Kelsey Chambers posting big numbers in the final two games to earn Athlete of the Week honors.

Chambers scored an impressive four goals in the Lady Trojans’ 6-1 win over Westfield last Friday, April 11 in Perry.

“We have been playing more defensively. Against Westfield, we could push forward with Kelsey and help her,” head coach Tinna Gallagher said. “It was rather early when we got the first goal. I was happy because it kind of broke that wall that we had since we haven’t scored a lot.”

Gallagher was impressed that Chambers was able to post such high numbers, especially since JMA has struggled to put points on the board this season.

“For us, it hasn’t happened often, so it was great,” Gallagher said. “It shows her effort — she didn’t settle for one or two, but went for four, and they’re lucky she didn’t score more.”

In the team’s last home match on Wednesday, April 16 Chambers scored the Lady Trojans’ only goal against Westminster, despite the team falling 6-1.

Fouled in the 18-yard box, Chambers capitalized on her opponents errors, scoring on the third attempt after the Westminster goalie blocked her shot twice before on a penalty kick play.

“That’s her determination,” Gallagher said. “The girls were happy to get a goal because it was against a good team.”

“Kelsey, in front of the goal she’s very dangerous,” the proud coach added. “They had to foul her.”

A multi-sport athlete, Chambers’ five goals in less than a week has proven her athletic ability to her coaches and peers.

“She’s a really good forward. She’s always dangerous,” her coach said. “She’s very fast and very athletic. She outruns all of the defenders, even when we play the stronger teams. She’s a great weapon for us.”
