Trojan softball just misses at Piedmont Tournament

MILLEDGEVILLE — John Milledge Academy softball worked several combinations throughout the early season Piedmont Tournament Aug. 8-10. Despite three losses, the entire roster got live action experience.

“We had different rotations going in and different people playing with each other. It was good to have that flexibility, but when push comes to shove we've got to finish a ball game,” JMA head coach Kori Pickowitz said.

The opening game was an 8-0 loss to Flint River. Pickowitz said the Trojans didn't play well as a team.

Game two ended 6-5 in favor of opponent Piedmont. The back and forth game ended poorly.

“The girls came out and fought, but we've got to be able to finish a game,” Pickowitz said. “That's one thing we've preached going into this week. We need to play seven innings on and off the field.”

Senior leader Kate Giddens and freshman Megan Davis both pitched against Piedmont. Davis entered during the sixth inning and struck out two.

Next up, JMA lost 4-3 in an International Tiebreaker to Gwinnett Schools.

The Trojans led 3-0 after three innings. Gwinnett came back in the fifth forcing extras.

“Going into extra innings and taking that loss was an eye opener for us,” Pickowitz said.

Giddens threw seven strikeouts against Gwinnett.

John Milledge roared back right after the third negative game ending the tournament with a 10-4 win over Briarwood.

“We were doing the little things for seven full innings versus doing those critical things for the first four innings and getting comfortable,” the Trojan coach said. “I think we are climbing over the hump, and once we figure that out, we'll be able to keep moving forward.”

The preseason tournament gave the 17-deep roster a chance to learn each other under the fire.

Kelsey Chambers and Courtney Cox mirrored each other hitting 7-for-12 last weekend.

“They are going to be big in the beginning of the lineup getting on base,” Pickowitz said. “They just have to find a way on. I don't care how you do it if you become a base runner and your on base percentage is high.”

Giddens hit 6-for-13 as well.

JMA softball enters a five-game home stand this Thursday facing Westfield at 4:30 p.m.
