MILLEDGEVILLE — Serving as the only senior in Georgia Military Prep School’s lineup this spring, Hunter Mims demonstrated that he is a force to be reckoned with on the baseball field as the team’s top pitcher and batter. His showing this season ultimately earned Athlete of the Week honors for his performance in the Bulldog’s 10-5 win against Westside-Macon last week.
Mims led the squad going 3-for-4 at the plate with a three-run homerun and two singles, while also pitching a complete game.
“Hunter started off the year pretty strong,” Allen Simmons, head coach said. “He was a constant contributor for us all year, not only offensively, but defensively as well.”
For the experienced senior, it was about being disciplined and doing all the right things against the Seminoles last week.
“I’ve been in situations like that before, so I just focused on putting the ball in play and throwing strikes. That was my day of pitching,” Mims said. “I was hitting my strikes and hitting my zones, and my hitting, I felt good about that. Everything was there that day.”
Heading into the contest, Simmons had complete confidence in Mims to get the job done, and he did.
“I know when he’s on he can go the distance with anyone,” Simmons said. “At the plate, when he sees the ball and gets the pitches he wants, he can hit the ball well. When he’s focused and determined, he can do it.”
Being part of a young team, Mims proved to be the go-to player for the Bulldogs in big games such as the one against Westside last week.
“Without him being in our lineup offensively, there are some games that we might not have been in. Defensively, he stepped up and was our No. 1 pitcher,” Simmons said. “When we had a big game and we wanted to win, he was the guy we went to all year. You felt confident, wherever you put him, he was going to make the plays.”
While Mims led GMC Prep on paper in the team’s win over the Seminoles, he also served as a leader off the field.
“The biggest thing I can say about Hunter is his leadership,” Simmons said. “To be the only senior on such a young team and continue to motivate them to stay focused just speaks volumes about what kind of kid he is.”
Despite the team’s overall record Mims proved that he was one of the best players in the area this season, and Simmons is pleased to see his senior leader earn the honor of Athlete of the Week.
“I’m happy for him and for his accomplishments to be recognized,” he said. “It’s good for the team to see that even though we struggled this year, he kept working hard and he was able to receive an honor like this.”
With the season coming to an end this week, Mims admits everything just fell into place.
“It feels really good. It all kind of came together,” he said. “It was my last chance, so I’m glad to get this recognition. I’m happy to be it [Athlete of the Week] and I appreciate getting the recognition.”
