Braves host first wrestling camp

MILLEDGEVILLE — Hoping to develop local youth wrestlers, Baldwin High’s wrestling team plans to host its first-ever Braves Wrestling Camp next week, June 3-7, in the BHS gym from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for rising eighth graders to 12th graders, with hopes of promoting the sport within the community.

With the help of former BHS wrestlers now competing at the collegiate level, the Braves look to put on a camp that wrestlers want to come back to year after year.

“This year, we’re just trying to get people out there and show them what kind of a camp we can do, and hopefully we can get them back next year. We’ll have some people coming in to help, like Floyd [Canty] will help,” Andrew Lindsay, BHS head coach, said. “This is the first one we’ve done like this, so we’re just trying to get more interest in the community with wrestling. We’re hoping to have a good turnout, but

as of right now, we’re just looking to spark interest.”

The camp will focus on improving the campers’ technique by teaching them new moves and then implementing them in controlled live wrestling scrimmage sessions.

“Basically, the way it’s going to be set up, they’ll be learning technique and live wrestling. We may incorporate little games with the live wrestling,” Lindsay said. “We’re going to be doing a lot of drilling, but drilling comes with learning the move.”

One of the methods that will be used by Lindsay and his staff to help the campers learn different moves is call chain-wrestling, which incorporates several moves into one.

“That’s kind of how we’re going to be learning at this camp. We’ll learn a move, learn another move, then learn another move and build off each other,” Lindsay said. “One of the issues that high school wrestlers have, is they learn a move and they don’t continue to learn the rest of the move.”
