Ramsey wins third straight

MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville’s Ashlan Ramsey defeated Jenna Hague by a score of 7 and 6 in the 36-hole final of the Women’s Western Golf Association’s 113th National Amateur Championship at Dayton Country Club in Dayton, Ohio.

The tournament started Monday, June 17 with 144 players and two-day qualifying on the par-71, 5,948 yard Dayton course.  

Ramsey shot 69-72, placing her in the sixth match play seed.

Five matches later, and the incoming Clemson Tiger made the championship.

Ramsey overcame some physical ailments the morning of the final match.

Coming off the practice tee, Georgia’s top female didn’t think she could play. Ramsey decided to take a chance and promptly birdied the first hole.

She followed that up with birdies on fifth and seventh. Hague won a few holes on the back nine, but at the end the first 18-hole round the scorecard had Ramsey four up.  

During the second 18, Ramsey won four out of five holes until Hague sunk a putt on 11 to win the hole when players were told to take shelter for thunder and lightning in the area. After approximately a 45-minute delay, they halved the 12th hole and the victory was in Ramsey’s hands.  

Ramsey is playing better than any other female amateur in the country.

Last week, she won the Eastern Amateur Championship, and the week before that she won the Georgia Women’s Amateur Championship.   

Ramsey adds her name to a champion’s list including Ariya Jutanugarn, Stacy Lewis, Brittany Lang, Grace Park and Nancy Lopez to name a few.

Ramsey will enter Clemson University this fall. She is taking a week off to attend her freshman orientation.
