Braves pick up fourth in a row

MILLEDGEVILLE — Baldwin High’s baseball team battled the elements on Wednesday evening, as the Braves took on Monticello at home.

Earning their fourth win in a row to put the team 5-1 on the season, the Braves emerged victorious over the Hurricanes with a 7-6 win.

“It was very cold, obviously, but I thought we did extremely well as far as battling each inning,” Donnie Coburn, head coach, said. “We battled and it took time, but it was a good win for us. It’s four in a row that we’ve won, and we haven’t gone four in a row in a while.”

Utilizing four pitchers in an effort to conserve the Braves’ pitching staff for later in the week, Coburn admits he was pleased with how thing played out on the mound against Monticello.

“The pitchers, I mean from Jonathan Tompkins to Brandon Knowles to Sterlin Steele to Jarrett Todd, I thought all of them did extremely well,” he said. “I didn’t expect to go with Todd for three innings there at the end, but he held his own and kept a short pitch count. He was throwing strikes after he got warmed up.”

While the pitching proved to go well BHS Wednesday night, the bats were off in the contest.

“We didn’t hit it the way I thought we should have,” Coburn said. “I think a lot of that has to do with the colder weather; the elements were the key tonight, and that’s part of it.”

Corey Dunn and Tylan Eunice each led the Braves with two runs apiece, while both went 2 for 3 at the plate.

Overall, Coburn was satisfied with the senior leadership in the game against the Hurricanes, as Monticello tried to come back late in the contest, but BHS fought back to maintain the lead.
