GMC gets win in home opener

MILLEDGEVILLE — Landing its third win of the season, Georgia Military College opened up its home schedule Saturday, with a big 52-7 victory over Atlanta Sports Academy at Davenport Field.

While the Bulldogs’ offense took time to warm up, head coach Bert Williams was proud of the team’s defense for coming out and playing four straight quarters against the Spartans.

“I thought our defense probably played their best game, start to finish,” Williams said. “I felt like they were ready to go from the get-go and did a better job executing, did a better job screwing things down a little tighter on our underneath coverage than we did against Snow. So it was good to see that improvement.”

Leading the way defensively was Dezmin Reed with nine tackles in the contest, three of which were for a loss and a sack.

Donte Beckham followed suit with seven tackles of his own, while the Bulldogs’ defense finished the game with five sacks and two fumble recoveries.

“I thought we had a couple of guys on the defensive side that have been playing some, but maybe not as much - Dezmin Reed, I thought did some really good things; Buddy Byers did some nice things at corner  — they got to get him a lot of good reps,” Williams said.

On offense, GMC took a few drives to get going, struggling to find its rhythm against the Spartans’ defense.

“Offensively, I felt like we started a little slow. Shaky is not really the right word, but just weren’t playing the way we’re capable of playing,” Williams said. “We had two long drives, and we did get some points out of those, but then we did three three-and-outs and then did a short-play scoring drive, but we just didn’t have a good flow offensively. Then we started doing some things right in the second half then it kind of got out of hand.”

Jovon Robinson continued to put up big numbers with 11 carries for 107 yards and two trips to the end zone on Saturday, followed by Patrick Thomas who completed half of his passing attempts against ASA for 91 yards and a touchdown.

GMC’s Akeem Judd played well with 12 carries for 60 yards, while fellow tailback John Tatum picked up six points of his own in the contest.

Williams was encouraged with the performance of Emanuel Byrd as well, as Byrd went 2-for-3 through the air for 49 yards, a touchdown and an interception, and rushed seven times for 39 yards and a touchdown.

“Offensively, Emanuel Byrd got a lot more snaps. We’ve got to get him to slow down and let some things happen a little better,” Williams said. “He just tries to press so much, so hard, and he can do a lot of things, but you can’t do it all in one snap. So we’ve just got to get him to relax a little bit and let his game come forth.”

The proud head coach was pleased that many of the players on the GMC sideline got to play, something he hopes will help later in the future of the program.

“Just good to get a lot of guys some snaps to get some [evaluation], and give them a taste of the game and be able to move forward and hopefully just build some experience on that to bring it forth when we need it,” he said.

With the win, GMC moves to 3-0 to start the 2013 season and currently sits 1-0 at home.

“A lot of good things went on today. It’s just good to get a win at home, and it’s nice to be here and not have to get on a bus and travel,” Williams said. “Just proud of our kids, all of our kids; I think most everybody got a chance to get out there and play. I’m just proud of the way our guys went out there and got the big win.”
