JMA Clay Shooting Team remains undefeated

MILLEDGEVILLE — Eighty-one athletes representing 10 GISA schools gathered at Old Hudson Plantation on Saturday.

Each shooter competed in skeet (50 targets) and sporting clays (100 targets). The top 3 overall scores from each school were combined for the team scores.

JMA’s squad of Wil Goette (140), Morgan Goette (131) and Chandler Bryant (124) took first with a score of 395 out of a possible 450. Gatewood’s Jasper Copelan (145), Taylor Hyatt (126) and Jarred Camp (119) finished five targets behind for second place. Stratford took third with John Hancock fourth and Woodward Academy fifth.

The JMA squad of Hunter Henry (116), Justin Hendricks (116) and Micah Aultman (110) came in sixth out of 20 squads.

Jasper Copeland, a Gatewood sophomore, won High Overall with a 50 in skeet and a 95 in sporting. JMA senior, Wil Goette, was second with a 48 in skeet and a 92 in sporting. JMA sophomore Morgan Goette’s scores of 43 on skeet and 88 on sporting put her in third overall and first in ladies.

Fourth went to Davis Jones, a freshman at Stratford, with senior Jackson Dennis from John Hancock finishing in fifth. In Ladies, Morgan bested her nearest competitor, Samantha Simonton, from Lakeview Academy by 30 targets. Piedmont’s Anne Marie Hildebrant (95) finished third.

The first ever GISA clay shooting state championship will be held in Savannah at Forest City Gun Club on Dec. 6 and 7. The athletes will shoot 100 trap targets, 100 skeet targets, and 100 sporting clay targets. More than 175 competitors in eighth to 12th grades are expected to attend.
