Undefeated JMA hosts Briarwood

MILLEDGEVILLE — Freshman running back Cam O’Neal’s production last week sums up one fact for this year’s John Milledge Academy football roster: The Trojans are deep.

Head coach J.T. Wall said it’s always good when you can get a look at the young guys under the lights.

“The young guys have taken on this whole mindset. We are scoring and still not allowing points when they are in there. From the first to the end of the game, we allowed a total of eight yards. When you are able to get young guys in there and still play at a high level, it makes the future look bright,” Wall said

JMA carries a perfect 7-0 record into a matchup with Briarwood tonight.

The Bucs are .500 overall and 1-1 in region.

The Trojans usually scrimmage Briarwood each summer but didn’t this year because of the region switch. Wall said you always know what to expect from the Bucs.

“They have hit us in the mouth each time. They are very physical and coached very well. Briarwood will try to get you misaligned with formations,” Wall said. “We have to make sure we are sound and ready to go on defense. It’s going to be a good test for us. We are up for the challenge.”

Briarwood scored 62 points against Central Fellowship and only allowed one touchdown by Gatewood.

JMA moves one game at a time, focusing on winning each week to guarantee a playoff spot. Compared to last year when the meat of the schedule was final few games, the Trojans look like a team heading to an undefeated regular season.

“It’s hard not to look down the road. We have to take care of right now. We can’t overlook anybody. Everybody can beat us if we don’t do what we are supposed to do,” Wall said.

JMA walks the fine line between cockiness and confidence, as they roll in all three phases.

Everyone from top to bottom seems to buy into the mission of controlling the little things.

“We have a different mindset than usual this time of year. I’m confident in our seniors. We are very senior heavy,” Wall said. “For us it’s been very good. They all have good attitudes and are here for same goal.”

JMA hosts Briarwood at 7:30 p.m. today.
