GMC confident against strong opponent

MILLEDGEVILLE — Ranked as the number seven team in the National Junior College Athletic Association, Georgia Military College travels to the neutral site of the University of West Virginia in Morgantown, W.Va. to take on 10th-ranked ASA College of Brooklyn Sunday.

A new program at the collegiate ranks, ASA College fields a team of young talent that has produced early success.

“The ASA Avengers — they’re a relatively young program, as far as football goes,” Bert Williams, head coach, said. “They got good in a hurry.”

Williams expect this weekend’s matchup between the Bulldogs and Avengers to be a tough one, with two top-10 ranked teams going head-to-head.

“They’re a very strong team,” he said. “They’ll be very tough; they’ll be a very physical team up front offensively.”

The Bulldogs will look to Davonte Lambert, Kenderius Whitehead, Jamarlo Alford and Devaroe Lawrence, Blake Robbins and Devante Covington to win the battle in the trenches this weekend, especially with the absence of Shakuille Rooks due to a dislocated shoulder from last week’s game against Atlanta Sports Academy.

On offense, GMC plans to control the clock and take advantage of its rushing attack with Jovon Robinson and Patrick Thomas.

Averaging 178 yards per game, Robinson will be one of the key elements in the Bulldogs’ offensive plan to handle the Avengers fast style of play.

“Defensively, they kind of remind me of a Texas JUCO,” Williams said. “They play hard and play fast.”

Offensively, the team will play without Joe Harris due to injury, and the other half of GMC’s dynamic duo in the backfield, Akeem Judd, may not play this weekend as well.

“We’ve got a few impactful injuries as far as our offense goes,” Williams said.

However, GMC will approach Sunday’s game with a similar mindset as the team’s first three contests this season, which is to take care of the football and minimize the mistakes.
