Today's game features Gold Rush benefit for childhood cancer awareness

MILLEDGEVILLE — Positive hitting stats throughout John Milledge Academy softball’s lineup have the Trojans 3-2 in region play this season.

Since a 5-1 loss to Brentwood Aug. 22, JMA split a doubleheader with Bulloch Aug. 27, beat Edmund Burke 12-3 Aug. 29, and snuck by Gatewood 3-2 last Tuesday.

JMA head softball coach Kori Pickowitz said it feels good to get some region wins under the belt.

“We still have a lot to work on and improve, but I feel like we are getting to the point now where everyone is starting to fill a role, accept it and get the job done. That’s creating some wins for us,” Pickowitz said.

The Gatewood Gators walked Trojan star Kate Giddens every time last Tuesday. Kelsey Chambers shined hitting 3-for-4.

Pickowitz said the entire lineup batted at least .500 during the game. The Trojans are gelling as a team offense.

“These last few weeks we’ve done a lot of hitting and visualization of hitting the gaps and making sure we make contact hitting the ball hard somewhere,” Pickowitz said. “Hopefully, that will produce base runners producing runs, and that’s really been our focus.”

Giddens struck out six at Gatewood.

Between Giddens and Megan Davis, John Milledge has a consistent pitching duo. Both play outfield when not on the mound.

“It’s nice when the time comes to just switch them and know they feel comfortable in both of those roles,” the JMA coach said.

The team dynamic is finally coming together, according to Pickowitz.

Next up is this afternoon’s home matchup with region team Pinewood.

“They are going to be challenging, so we just need to play the way we have the last couple of games. If we can play a full seven innings from the first to the last pitch, I think we have a chance to win both contests,” she said.

Today’s home doubleheader against Pinewood starts at 4 p.m.

In addition to softball, JMA hosts a Gold Rush event benefiting National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

Kids affected by the disease will be recognized between games.
