Nationally ranked GMC defends home turf

MILLEDGEVILLE — Ninth-ranked Georgia Military College opens up its home schedule Saturday at Davenport Field, taking on the Atlanta Sports Academy (ASA) for the third time in the school’s history.

Following a long road trip last week to take on Snow College, in which the Bulldogs pulled off a win, GMC will enjoy the support of the home crowd this weekend for the first of five home contests this season.

“We’re excited about playing in front of a home crowd,” Bert Williams, head coach, said.

GMC’s opponent, ASA, is a one-=year program designed to help young athletes find a home at a four-year school.

“They’re a post-grad program,” Williams said. “They basically try to market themselves similar to what we do here at a junior college.”

Facing many players from around the southeast, the Bulldogs will be challenged by a quick, talented ASA team Saturday.

“They get a lot of guys from Georgia, the Atlanta-area and around the southeast,” Williams said. “They have a lot of team speed. Their team speed is probably as good as anybody we face all year.”

Averaging 170 yards in the air and 279 yards rushing per game, the Bulldogs will have their work cut out for them against a physical ASA defense.

“Defensively, they bring pressure and they pack the box pretty good,” Williams said. “They’ll give us a different scheme than we’ve seen the last couple of weeks.”

On defense, Williams believes his squad will have to wrap up the ball carrier on the first hit and make tackles on Saturday to keep the ASA playmakers out of the end zone.

“They’ve got big playmakers on the offensive side of the ball,” he said. “We’ve got to make sure we wrap up and get everybody to the ball to make sure we get the ball carrier down.”
