Dogs look for one more win over Twiggs

MILLEDGEVILLE — Approaching its final contest, Georgia Military Prep School hopes to end the season on a high note with a win over region foe Twiggs County on the road Friday night.

A victory over the Cobras could potentially keep the Bulldogs alive for a post-season birth, pending on whether teams in Region 7-A win or lose Friday night.

“We feel like if we go out and we win Friday night, and things fall into place with some other teams, that we do still have a chance,” Steven Simpson, head coach, said. “We’ve preached to our kids all week, ‘if you go out and play well, you win the ball game and you take care of the things that you can handle, let the other things sort of fall where they fall and we’ll see what happens.’”

Over the course of the 2013 season, GMC Prep has drastically improved, especially offensively, as the team has accumulated close to 1,500 yards rushing this fall.

“The difference and the progress we’ve made from the first game to the last few is cutting out mistakes and coming together as an O-line,” Simpson said. “They’ve sort of come together in the last half of the season and really been able to help us achieve our goals of running the football and keeping it away from other people — limiting other team’s possessions.”

The Bulldogs have made improvements on defense as well this season, which has aided in the success the team has had in the second half of the season against top teams in the state.

“Defensively, we’ve sort of evolved from where we started, 3-5-wise to now we’re running more of a 4-2-5 look,” Simpson said. “Personnel sort of dictated that due to some losses during the season, but the kids have adapted well every week, and the kids have come to practice every week focused and we’ve grown as a team.”
