MAMMA competitors medal at Rush Cup

MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville Academy of Mixed Martial Arts (MAMMA) finished second in the Rush Cup Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Tournament Saturday, June 8.

Rush MMA out of Macon hosted the event at Tattnall Square Academy.

MAMMA’s 21 competitors earned 85 points behind only Rush’s 30 grapplers.

Young BJJ competitors highlighted by 13-year-old by Cameron Sparks earned numerous top three medals at the Rush Cup.

MAMMA owner Frank Mullis was pleased with his group. Mullis has seen kids like his daughters Catherine and Rachel come in with no knowledge and pick up the BJJ sport quickly.

Adult competitors such as MAMMA instructor James Pruett stood out at Rush once again. Pruett hasn’t lost a match in the last two years at the event.

Being able to routinely compete with much larger Atlanta-based mixed martial schools means a lot.

“We usually place in the top three or four teams,” Mullis said. “It’s a big accomplishment.”

The local BJJ athletes head to the NewBreed Atlanta Grappling Championship July 20.

BJJ’s grappling fundamentals allow a smaller person, using proper leverage and technique, to defend against a bigger opponent.

The ground-oriented discipline has a local home at MAMMA. Mullis officially opened the dojo back in September 2007.

Mullis, currently a BJJ brown belt, has more than 15 years logged training with jiu-jitsu legends Renzo Gracie, former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra and Paul Creighton to name a few.

The Milledgeville facility recently became a Serra BJJ Affiliated Team Academy. The South Wayne Street dojo maintains a student base of 40 to 50 kids and older adults.

MAMMA teaches self-protection while using the sport aspect of one of the most beneficial martial arts worldwide.

The academy prides itself on youth programs. BJJ offers children an alternative to throwing punches or kicks.

Youth sessions help boost fitness levels and create a team feel.

BJJ isn’t the sole discipline available. MAMMA holds boxing and kickboxing classes as well.

MAMMA is located at 1067 S. Wayne St. Call (478) 363-1502 or visit for class pricing and weekly schedules.
