UR ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: McCommon handles post move

MILLEDGEVILLE — John Milledge Academy head boys’ basketball coach Thomas Craig asked a lot of junior Colby McCommon.

The athletic Trojan switched from a guard to post player per coach’s orders due to the team’s undersized roster.

McCommon said it took some time to get settled in and start scoring.

“(Colby) has fed on it and really worked hard at it. Not only can he post up on you, but he can step out and hit the three,” Craig said. “I was worried if he would take on that role or not. He’s shown consistency in the last few weeks for us.”

McCommon scored 16 points and grabbed six rebounds in a 14-point win over region rival Pinewood Jan. 24 that helped earn the Trojan Athlete of the Week.

The junior used his physicality to earn trips to the free-throw line at Pinewood.

“I’m always ready to get after it,” McCommon said.

Craig said McCommon answered the challenge that night with Brandon Panfil out.

“I said Colby I need you to get to the line, and he rose to that,” the coach said. “He rebounded well and played within his means. We’ll go as far as Colby goes. If he’s on a roll, we will be on a roll too.”

The Athlete of the Week has fouled out with some overzealous plays this season. Craig likes that aggression though.

“You have to get in there and get mean with them, get rebounds, box out and get points off the shots,” the Trojan said. “It’s rough down there. I get pretty physical.”

A tremendous season as the Trojan quarterback last fall carried right over to the court.

“He’s going to knock you around, be in the right position and make you pay,” Craig added. “He really is a complete player.”

McCommon is a team first guy. The group continues coming together at 9-6 overall this season.

“We are smaller, but we have more energy and fight to us,” McCommon said.

Craig said the Pinewood victory previewed the potential.

“We have so many athletes on this team,” he said. “We are playing eight or nine guys right now and any one of them can go off on a given night. Our team works hard.”

JMA faces Bethesda at the Trojan Center tonight tipping at 6 p.m.

The Trojans blew a nine-point lead in Savannah two weeks ago.

Craig said the team hasn’t forgotten the disappointment.

“That’s still bitter for us,” he said.

The boys’ team wants to end the week 4-2 in region with a win over the Blazers and a rescheduled matchup at Bulloch Saturday. This would move JMA to second place in 4-AAA.
