Bethesda runs away from JMA

The second half was close, but John Milledge Academy varsity boys basketball lost 61-39 at the hands of Bethesda Friday.

JMA boys’ head coach Thomas Craig said the three-hour Savannah trip seems to bother the Trojans.

“We dug a little too deep to come back from the first half,” Craig said.

Bethesda made nine 3-pointers and shot 60 percent from the field.

JMA couldn’t keep up.

“Sometimes, you have to tip your hat to a team that is pretty much on fire, and they were,” Craig said. “They spread the ball out a bunch early on which created a lot of problems for us.”

Junior Brandon Panfil led the JMA effort with 13 points. Senior Brantley Attaway missed his first 10 shots from the field and managed only nine points.

The Trojan’s No. 1 scorer couldn’t find his touch.

Two huge region home games tonight and Friday’s Senior Night will decided the direction for Craig’s team.

“Hopefully, we come out and battle to give ourselves a chance,” the Trojan head coach said.

Tonight’s game against region leading Westminster won’t be easy.

Currently, JMA sits fourth in the region. Craig said wins this week could throw a kink into region tournament seeding, with a second seed bye still an outside possibility.

At 7-9 overall and 2-4 in region, the boys need to be a little more consistent with the little things. Rebounding, turnovers and free throws are vital this time of year.

“I just want to see us execute on offense. If we can do that, we can start making some noise right here and get some wins late in the season to push us right in,” Craig said.
