MILLEDGEVILLE — The second annual Running with the Braves 5K and 1 Mile Fun Run will help offset the cost of feeding 100 team members nutritious, pregame meals for the 2013 season.

Event coordinators Kevin Dominy and his wife Lee Ann anticipate this event as a positive way to involve families and friends that will not only benefit the Baldwin Braves football program but also bring the community together.

Bringing the players to the people is a huge part of Running with the Braves. Meeting the young student athletes face-to-face boosts community involvement.

There were 170 registered runners for last year’s event. Folks enjoyed connecting with the county’s team.

“When you are sitting in the stands, you really lose sight of the fact that these are teenagers,” Dominy said. “Seeing these kids in just their jerseys made a big difference.”

This year’s road race is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 17. at Oak Hill Middle School and serves as the kickoff for the Baldwin Braves football season.

Dominy said it takes $5,000 to feed the Braves varsity team. Event organizers hope to reach that goal.

“If we can do that, everything else we raise throughout the year can go to the other things they need,” Dominy said.

Like many athletic programs, Baldwin can really use the funds for simple equipment needs down to practice and game balls for the fall.

The 5K begins promptly at 8 a.m. with the Fun Run following.
