From staff reports
The Georgia Military College Prep varsity track teams traveled to Greene County High School to compete in their second meet of the season. Both GMC teams competed well, improving on their performances from earlier in the season while some set personal records.
The meet started off great for GMC, as Taylor Payne took first place in the long jump with a personal record of 20 feet 6 inches. Not far behind Payne, Kobe Lawrence took second with a personal best of 20 feet 2 inches.
Shortly after winning the long jump, Payne took first in the triple jump setting another personal record of 40 feet 2 inches. In the first race of the day, the 4x100 relay team consisting of Payne, Lawrence, Markel Jones and Quan Wright placed third — just .04 seconds off of the school record the same group set last year. Proving that the last meet was no fluke, Quatavious Brisco took first and second place in the 300-meter and 110-meter hurdles while Brandon Davis also placed third in the hurdles.
In a tight 100-meter race, Jones earned third place against a very tough field. In the final race of the evening, the 4x400 team consisting of Brisco, Jones, Malik Bradley and Payne took second in an exciting race.
The girls’ team also performed well with improved scores in all events. Leading the way for the girls was Kita Aycock winning first in the triple jump and 200-meter race, while also taking second in the 100 meters. Continuing her success from the cross country team, Elizabeth Savage took first in the 3200 meters (two mile) and second in the 1600 meters (one mile). Also performing well for the team was Taylor Wooden placing third in the 100-meter hurdles.
GMC’s next varsity meet is slated for today at Athens Academy.
