BHS splits weekend games with Wilkinson

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Baldwin High School basketball teams split a pair of non-conference weekend games against rival Wilkinson County. The girls’ team won 66-42, and the boys’ team lost 74-59, before an estimated 1,500 spectators at the BHS gymnasium Saturday night.

The girls’ team broke a three-game losing streak with a late opening quarter 14-point run that was started with a pair of free throws by senior Destynee Reynolds. Her second shot from the charity stripe gave her team a 9-8 lead that they would never relinquish. Senior Terrian Williams got six of her team-high 20 points during that run and added a team-high seven boards by the end of the contest.

Wilkinson County did score 11 points in the final four minutes of the first half to draw within seven points at the half, 27-20.

The closest Wilkinson County would get was within two scores at 29-23 early in the third quarter before that quarter ended 45-34 in favor of the Bravettes.

“It was a rivalry game so we wanted to come out and play well,” said girls’ head coach Randall Owens.

“We felt that in the first half we didn’t do well enough defensively, but we made some second-half adjustments and went on to win the game.”

Sophomore Tykeasia Williams added 13 points and nine assists, while freshman Courtney Butts had a dozen points. The Bravettes were strong on the glass with seniors Kayla McCray and Shemirika Manson pulling down six and five boards, respectively.

The boys’ basketball team had its two-game winning streak snapped. The Braves played their best in the final quarter, scoring 21 of the game’s final 28 points before falling 74-59.

“We kind of got away, as a team, from what we wanted to do and as a result ended up being down 17 (at the intermission),” said boys’ head coach Rechard Larkin.
