JMA still seeking perfection against CFCA

MILLEDGEVILLE — The perfect football search continues for the John Milledge Academy Trojans against Central Fellowship Christian Academy tonight.

A 49-7 drubbing of Covenant in the region opener was dominant though Trojan head football coach J.T. Wall said it could always be a little better.

The only score was a 77-yard kickoff return. JMA had no turnovers last week.

“Even though we did take care of things early, we still had some minor things to clean up. On different calls offensively and defensively we aren’t 100 percent right now doing what we are supposed to do, but we are getting close. We want to get as close as we can to being perfect,” Wall said.

The Lancers enter tonight 3-3 overall with one region loss.

Wall said CFCA runs the spread and I-formation attack most games.

“Defensively, we’ve got to be ready for everything. They’ve got a couple of playmakers that are back from last year. They are low in overall numbers, but the guys they’ve got are pretty good,” Wall said.

So far this fall, the JMA defense has been ready allowing around eight points per game.

Monday through Thursday practices are rigorous. Defensive coordinator Dwight Danuser and staff expect high effort and football IQ.

Wall said the game should be a breeze if the Trojans practice the right way.

“At practice we want them flying to the ball because we’ve said all year if you fly to the ball good things happen,” the JMA coach said. “I think we are hard on those guys in the film room, and it’s starting to pay off. Guys are actually able to see why we want them doing certain things.”

JMA team conditioning has them outlasting opponents.

Defensive schemes are putting the Trojans in the position to succeed and have fun smacking offensives back.

Offensively sophomore Cam O’Neal posted a solid game last week.

O’Neal returned from an injury hiatus to rush for 107 yards and two touchdowns off 10 carries.

“(Cam) came in after a couple of weeks and did well. He made the most of his opportunities,” Wall said. “I think he has a bright future. Cam fits in well with this stable of backs we have right now. We are just trying to keep them healthy.”

Tonight’s JMA home game begins at 7:30 p.m.
