Trojans fight to end losing streak

MILLEDGEVILLE —

Non-region losses sting while not ending your baseball season.

After three straight downers, John Milledge Academy hopes for an outside chance at a 7th region crown.

“We are capable of coming back to win this region. We just have to play better ball,” JMA baseball head coach Justin Mills said.

Piedmont, Stratford and Trinity defeated JMA over the stretch. Monday’s game at Trinity didn’t start well.

Trinity hit the ball cleanly against JMA. The Trojans hurt themselves performing poorly on defense.

Pitching wise one Trojan senior looked good, as JMA tried to save their best arm for Tuesday’s region opponent Bulloch. Daniel Amerson allowed just two runs the last five innings Monday against Trinity who won 10-3.

Mills said his team could do so much better.

“We just need to come in with confidence,” he said.

In the 15-7 Stratford loss, JMA had some decent offense.

Seniors Heath Roberts and Ryan Bresse both went 2-for-3. Roberts had one double while Bresse posted two.

Senior Brantley Attaway was 1-for-3 and junior Chad Charping had two hits last week.

At Trinity the Trojans’ usual suspects Attaway, who went 2-for-3 with a double, and Bresse with one double and two RBI were the lone hitting numbers.

The first high scoring home game against Bulloch slipped away from JMA late. Mills hopes this week’s will end better.

“This is a team we can beat, and we need to beat,” the JMA coach said. “Basically, we need to come into this game with confidence and playing positive. Hopefully, we’ll get the breaks and come out with a big win.”

The non-region games haven’t crushed all playoff hopes, as JMA lurks with just five wins and a 2-2 region mark.

“These teams that we are playing are all good teams,” Mills said. “We aren’t playing any teams that we can roll in and make mistakes and beat. We have to do the small things right to win.”

Sophomore pitcher Ben Bracewell got the start at Bulloch. Mills likes the one-two combo on the mound.

“We definitely have it in us to make a run. The region is kind of wide open,” the Trojan coach said. “There isn’t a dominant team in the region. It’s just who is on and catching the breaks that day.”

Next up, the Trojans welcome Westminster Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
