GMC senior signs with VSU

Georgia Military College Prep School senior Page Jackson hopes she’ll be able to help Valdosta live up to the its nickname.

The town, which was named Title Town by ESPN following a vote by fans and supporters last summer, will be Jackson’s new home as a Valdosta State softball player following a partial scholarship signing at GMC Monday.

Seventeen-year-old Jackson, who has been playing softball since the age of 5, was obviously enthusiastic about signing with Valdosta Monday afternoon.

“I’m excited. I wanted to play and go to school at Valdosta,” she said. “I like being on a team. They become your closest friends and someone you can fall back on.”

Jackson has been playing shortstop and second base since freshmen year, but this year she worked especially hard to become a left-handed hitter.

Despite all of her hard work, Jackson is humble about her accomplishments and attributes her success to the support and help of her coaches, family and teammates.

“I want to thank God and my family first off,” she said. “My family has supported me through everything.

“I also want to thank all of my coaches that I’ve had since I was five years old, and I especially want to thank Coach Todd Dennard, Coach Laurie Simpson and Coach Couch for continually pushing me and supporting me.”

Jackson’s former teammates, as well as the support of the GMC Bulldog Club, were also on a list of people she thanked Monday afternoon.

GMC softball coach Garry Couch spoke with great confidence about Jackson’s abilities, both academically and athletically.

“She’s an outstanding athlete, and she’ll have no trouble fitting in there,” he said. “She’ll do fine-athletically and academically.”

Jackson will begin classes in the fall at Valdosta State University and despite earlier thoughts of majoring in pre-law, she is now considering a career as an anesthesiologist, she said.
