With the help of four touchdowns and over 200 total yards by tailback Steven Robinson, the GMC JUCO Bulldogs defeated the Troy Trojans JV squad 49-32 Sunday. Robinson had three rushing touchdowns with 160 yards on the ground as well as a 48 yard reception out of the backfield that was run in for a touchdown to lead the Bulldogs to victory.
“Steven did an outstanding job. He had a lot of real tough physical yards. I think the biggest thing is he just out ran them. One was a 50-60 yard run and the other was a 48 yard pass out of the back field. He just really out ran everybody,” said Bulldogs head coach Bert Williams.
The game also marked the return of Joei Fiegler who has missed the past couple games due to injury. Fiegler was 2-4 with 23 yards, a touchdown and an interception Sunday as Dallas Walker took most the snaps.
“We went into the game looking to give him the ball about 4 series to get his feet back under him and to ease him in slowly. He threw a pick in the first half and we didn't get him back in until the second half,” said Williams.
The Bulldogs were fortunate to have as much offensive success as it did since the defense struggled to contain the Trojans passing game. However, the Bulldogs offense didn’t help at times throwing two interceptions and fumbling once.
“The problem I had was that we were a little loose with the ball. We turned it over twice on two interceptions. Both on just bad throws and one fumble that didn’t need to happen.
Defensively, I was a little disappointed by our coverage. We had some issues getting locked down. We had a real rough first half. B ut we came out and played a really good second half and took the lead back and took control of the game. I was real proud of the way came out after being down at half time,” said Williams.
The Bulldogs had a challenge facing a JV squad since there is no specific game tape to breakdown. Add on top of that the style of offense played by the Trojans and the 32 points given up becomes somewhat understandable.
“They challenged our defense and that style of offense is a hard one to stop. They’re in the shotgun and then catch it and throw it real quick. It’s tough to handle when we don’t see a lot of schemes like that. Then you don’t know how they’re going to attack you because you can’t get film study involved. The best you can do is based on what you see the varsity do,” Williams said.
The Bulldogs will have to overcome a short week this week to prepare as Valdosta State’s JV squad comes to Milledgeville for the Bulldogs home opener Thursday. Because of the cadet schedule, the team did not practice Monday and a command retreat Tuesday will prevent practice as well, but Williams has faith his guys will be prepared.
“It’s a little bit of an easy transition as far as the offensive styles. Similar philosophy for our defense. They’re a 4-3 defensive scheme at Valdosta and while they have some different wrinkles, there will be some similar type things. There will just be more of a difference in the physical recovery time more than anything. Not having to get on the bus will be a positive for our guys as well.”
The Bulldogs and Blazers kickoff at Davenport field Thursday evening at 6 p.m.
