The GMC Lady Dogs honored its seniors Thursday evening as Page Jackson, Chelsi Colburn, Mary Kathryn Mason and Amelia Haslam played their last regular season games at Couch Field.
“We’ve got four seniors and they’ve really done a good job this year leadership wise and everything else. With Chelsi on the mound and Mary Kathryn in left field and Amelia at first base. She was actually a catcher converted to first baseman and she’s done a great job. I think she’s only had one error all year,” said GMC head coach Garry Couch.
“Then Page Jackson is just phenomenal with her speed and her move from second base to shot stop. They’re four really good seniors. We’re going to miss them..”
It was a good night for the whole team on the field as well as GMC shutout Glascock Co. 10- 0 in five innings.
Colburn pitched a complete game with eight strikeouts. The only hit she gave up all day came in the fifth inning with one out before sitting down the next to for the victory.
“She threw well. She was kind of mad because she threw a rise ball there at the end and left it fat and the girl got a hit. But she spotted her pitched well and against the No. 2 team in the region, we just really wanted to play well on senior night.”
After getting one run in the first the Lady Dogs added five in the second. Jackson had a 2 RBI double to bring home Haslam and Alyssa Amerson who was running for Colburn.
Two batters later, Kaylee Johnson hit s shot to right center to score Jackson and Lauryn Dennard who reached on a single.
Kaylee Fuller hit a triple to left which brought home the sixth run for the Lady Bulldogs.
Couch said it was the best hitting by his team he has seen all year.
“We really hit the ball better than we have all year with just a few little things we’ve moved around with some adjustments to batters,”Couch said.
“If we can get them hitting with some authority and some power, it will give us other hits because its going to make the defense back up a little bit.”
The team was back at it in the fourth starting with singles by Johnson and Whitney Hardie. A Fuller sacrifice brought home Johnson and a series of hits and errors would score three more to give GMC a ten run lead.
The team will play six more games including a tournament this weekend in Lowndes Co. before wrapping up the season next Thursday at Wilkinson Co. The Lady Dogs are undefeated in the region ranked No. 1 and will finish the season that way barring a collapse this week..
