Lady Trojans shine on Senior Day, win 5-4

On the last regular season home game of the year as well as senior day for the five eldest John Milledge Lady Trojans, the team held on to defeat Trinity 5-4 in seven innings. Senior pitcher Macie Couey pitched a complete game giving up 4 hits, 8 strike outs and 3 earned runs.

Lady Trojans head coach Gordan Veal had plenty of praise for his five seniors.

“They are the leadership of this team. I lean on Macie a lot and in this league pitching, keeps you in the ball game. With Lindsay Attaway and Courtney Maddox on the corners, they’re the difference a lot of the time. People put the ball in play now because pitchers aren’t as dominant as they used to be. So our corners are key. And then you’ve got Kelli Dixon who can come in and play any outfield position or courtesy run. And Chelsea Williams in left has made some plays this year that have been game savers. She’s caught some fly balls that were way over her head.”

The Lady Crusaders went up early in the first with a pair of runs, but the Lady Trojans matched Trinity’s two runs and added two more to go up 4-2 through one inning. Macie Couey brought home the fifth run of the game on a double to score fellow senior Courtney Maddox. The Lady Crusaders looked to be on the verge of coming back in the fifth with two runs scored on sacrifices, but were unable to get the game tying run. Maddox came up big in the sixth throwing out two with shots across the diamond before the runners could reach base. Anna Williams was also able to throw out two Trinity runners from right field on what are normally routine singles.

“Our corners played well. Our middle infield is about as good as you can get with Stacey(Couey) and Brooke(Underwood) and our outfielders do their job. Anna Williams threw out two people from right field,” said Veal.”

On offense for JMA, Brooke Underwood went 2-3 with an RBI, Couey had an RBI double, and Kristin Satcher, Lynsey Rowland, and Carlie O’Neal also drove in runs for the team.

With two regular season games left, the Lady Trojans are in the driver’s seat to win its region.

“The ball’s in our court, we’ve got to win out. We have to win Tuesday against Pinewood and the following Monday at Gatewood. If we lose to Pinewood, we’re back with everyone else,” said JMA coach Gordan Veal.

If JMA can finish the season in either first or second in the region, it will get home field advantage in the first round of the playoffs.

The Trojans look to cap off the season next Tuesday at Pinewood.
