BHS Prep Shooter Chris Hernandez received an at-large invitation to compete at the 3rd annual Navy Area-12 Shooting Championships at Fort Benning, Georgia this last weekend 02 Feb 08. The TOP 84 Shooters from this state and northeast Florida’s Navy JROTC programs were at hand to demonstrate their skills and possibly advance to the Eastern final championships in rout to the National Championship in March 2008.
The match was a 3X20 format, which consisted of 20 shots in the prone, standing, and kneeling positions. We have been competing all year for the opportunity to compete at this level said BHS Coach Broach, we were hoping the team would qualify, however only Chris was able to score high enough to receive an invitation. We have a very young squad with most of our shooters competing only in their first year however we will continue to improve and be there in 2009.
At the end of the day, Chris Hernandez shot an aggregate score of 563 for a 281.5 average, which was good enough for 20th place over-all. However, the over-all winner was Kyle Philips from Luella High School with a score of 587 for a 288.5 average, he also won the final round with a standing score of 98.
The Team Championship (4 shooters) went again to Defending National Champions Henry County High School, which scored a combine team total of 2287 for the tournament.
We are still in the running for a state title said LT Hernandez; we are halfway through our GHSA Rifle season and we are currently in second place in our region. We are hoping to advance to the State Championship in March and if we get there anything in possible just ask Eli Manning of the New York Giants.
