Local kids participate in STEM summer science academy

MILLEDGEVILLE — Middle school and high school students from Milledgeville and surrounding counties are keeping busy this summer with CAPS-ATL’s STEM Forensic Summer Science Academy.

CAPS-ATL, the Committee for Action Programs Services – Analytical Training Laboratory, is an organization that provides analytical services in training and research to the global community.

The organization is holding this training academy in Milledgeville as a way to get kids interested in science.

During the first session, the students used the scientific method to analyze substances and come up with a theory as to what the substances are. Next week, the substances will be run through a machine to test the students’ assumptions.

By separating into teams to practice in research groups, the kids are learning the true value of synergy and working together.

Chairman and CEO of CAPS-ATL Darrell Davis, along with Vice President Ella Davis, are in town to run this camp and are very proud of and confident in the students’ abilities.

“We have kids who are very bright and know it, and then we have kids who are very bright and don’t quite know it yet,” Ella Davis said.

With the help of trained analysts and chemists, these kids will be able to expand their knowledge in the area of forensic science and develop an interest in related fields of science.
