Dates set for second film festival

MILLEDGEVILLE — The first Milledgeville Film Festival (MFF) was a notable debut this past April.

Georgia College's Magnolia Ballroom, Campus Blackbox Theatre and Arts and Sciences Auditorium hosted a well-attended dive into the festival world.

Intimate workshops with some of the industry's veteran directors, producers, casting directors, agents and actors provided a free industry lesson to hundreds of visitors.

Saturday and Sunday short and feature film screenings from around the world shined a light on the many different styles of filmmaking.

A community screening on a three-story blow up screen entertained as well.

MFF board chairman Jeremiah Bennett and vice chair B.J. Golnick think the 2015 edition will be even better. Dates are set for April 17-19.

GC Campus Life Director Tom Miles mentioned $60,000 of technical upgrades to Magnolia Ballroom that make the venue perfect for another gala and potentially the opening night feature film. The ballroom is booked for the Friday night intro.

“Let's take what was really great and streamline it,” Bennett said.

Hopefully, the MFF can book the campus theater for film and television professional panels next year.

The board is eyeing a Saturday night screening at Central State Hospital.

A chance encounter ended well for the city's future film footprint.

Bennett crossed paths with Edwin C. “Itsi” Atkins on a downtown street recently.

“Itsi” spent 10 years working on films in New York before traveling to Paramount Pictures in Los Angeles, Calif.

Atkins stayed there for five years and went all over the world. He retired in New York.

Credits include “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” and “Clear and Present Danger.”

“He's one of few people certified to be the production manager on $100 million-plus movies,” Bennett said.

The member of the Directors and Screen Actors Guild of America is working on independent ventures, such as several short films that made the Cannes Film Festival.

Atkins visited Milledgeville to revisit his deep family roots a few weeks ago and decided to move down later this summer.

“We have a lot of great folks to put this on the map,” Bennett said.

The festival will open entries by July.
