VIDEO: Mayor calls for Jarrett's removal

MILLEDGEVILLE — Milledgeville Mayor Richard Bentley will ask City Council for the removal of City Manager Barry Jarrett.

In a press conference held Friday the mayor said he will ask City Council next week to take steps for Jarrett’s removal.

The announcement comes a week after an audio recording was released raising questions about the city’s decision to transfer city funds from Century Bank & Trust to Wells Fargo.

After a March 3 called Council meeting had adjourned, Jarrett, council members and the city attorney are heard on the recording discussing the move and whether it would be publicly perceived as retaliation after the bank president wrote a less than favorable letter to the editor criticizing Council for its stance on city-county consolidation.

When asked about the recording, Jarrett said the decision to move the funds was not retaliatory. However, on the audio, Jarrett questions whether retaliation is an acceptable business tactic.

“What’s wrong with retaliation? It’s the way you do business,” said Jarrett on the recording, to which some councilors responded in agreement.

A called City Council meeting has been set for noon Monday to discuss a personnel matter in executive session.
