GMC Trustees select next college president

MILLEDGEVILLE — The Georgia Military College Board of Trustees has selected the college’s 21st president to lead the school.

According to a press release issued by trustees early Tuesday, the board has selected Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell IV to succeed Maj. Gen. Peter Boylan (Ret.) at the helm of the university.

Boylan is set to retire June 30.

“The unparalleled success experienced by GMC under the leadership of General Boylan paved the way for this successful search,” states the release. “The board extends its gratitude to him. There is no doubt that the level of interest and the quality of candidates is a testament to his vision, leadership and historic accomplishments.”

Caldwell currently serves as the commanding general of the U.S. Army North (Fifth Army) at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Caldwell’s awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Bronze Star, Humanitarian Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Presidential Service Identification Badge, Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge and Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge.

He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1976. He earned master’s degrees from the United States Naval Postgraduate School and from the School for Advanced Military Studies at the United States Army Command and General Staff College. Caldwell also attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University as a senior service college fellow.

The college selected the new president from a pool of 35 applicants for the position. The pool was narrowed down to a field of eight back in January. A search committee, composed of 16 members selected by Board of Trustees Chair Randy New, interviewed the eight candidates during a two-day session in Atlanta.

That field was narrowed to four finalists. Each of the four finalists recently visited the Milledgeville campus for on-campus interviews before the final selection was made.

Caldwell is expected to assume duties at the college in July after his family relocates to Milledgeville.

The president of GMC is the college’s chief executive officer and reports to the Board of Trustees. The president is also the senior management official of the college, responsible to the Board of Trustees for the strategic direction, overall financial performance and operational effectiveness of the college. Also tasked by the Board of Trustees, the president administers and conducts the affairs of the college, leading the faculty and staff in the development of exceptional students who succeed academically, possess solid values and are physically fit.
