STAR program to distinguish students, teachers for achievements

MILLEDGEVILLE — Local high school students and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic success will be recognized at the annual Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program luncheon next week sponsored by the Milledgeville-Baldwin County Chamber of Commerce.

“The STAR program honors Georgia’s outstanding high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. The main purpose of the STAR program is to unite educators with the business and civic community to honor academic excellence,” local Chamber CEO April Bragg said. “Students are selected based on SAT test scores and grade point average.”

This year’s honorees include seniors Michael Watson of Baldwin High School, Davis Farr of John Milledge Academy and Elliot Fairbrass of Georgia Military College Prep School.

Since his freshman year, Watson has been involved with the school theater, Thespian Troupe #2187, the mock trial team and Baldwin Marching Pride, serving as trumpet section leader, selected to numerous District and Region Honor Bands, and participated in the Georgia Music Educators Association’s All-State Chorus. He has been nominated for the Governor’s Honors Program in the area of social studies, and the Macon Telegraph’s Golden Eagle Award in the area of drama. Watson stays active within the community by assisting and tutoring with the Homework Helpers Ministry through Hardwick Baptist Church and Discipleship Christian Center. He was also a founding member of the school’s Political Science Club during his junior year. Watson will attend the University of Georgia in the fall as a political science major to pursue a career in teaching.

Farr is distinguished at JMA for maintaining a 4.0 GPA throughout his high school years and representing his class as one of the top three students. He has been involved in the National Honor Society, Senior Beta Club, Spanish Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, varsity soccer, baseball, basketball and golf. Farr is currently completing college courses through joint enrollment at Georgia College. As his extracurricular activities, he enjoys mentoring youth to help them improve their reading skills through Teen Trendsetters, as well as aiding individuals in need during the annual River of Life event with the fellowship of community churches. Farr plans to also attend the University of Georgia and major in mathematics.
