Social security office reduces hours

MILLEDGEVILLE — The local branch of the state social security office will undergo changes to its office hours this week, according to a press release.

Effective Monday, the Milledgeville social security office will reduce its operating hours by 30 minutes each weekday. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In addition, beginning Jan. 2, 2013, the office will close to the public at noon every Wednesday.

According to the state-issued release, the shorter public window allows social security office employees to complete face-to-face interviews and process claims work without incurring the cost of overtime. The overtime cuts are attributed to federal funding reductions.

This week, all social security offices statewide will close Friday to the public in an effort for employees to focus on reducing service backlog.

Local residents can visit the social security website to handle most issues with claims and benefits. For more information, visit www.socialsecurity.gov or call 1 (800) 325-0778.
