Secret Service eyeing $100 counterfeit bills

MILLEDGEVILLE — A suspect still at large purchased $4,700 worth of money orders throughout Milledgeville and Eatonton using high-grade counterfeit cash.

Baldwin County law enforcement are still tracking down more fake $100 bills.

The man hit the Flash Foods at 3056 N. Columbia St., the Jet 69 on 2783 N. Columbia St. and the Milledgeville Walmart in addition to Eatonton's Jet 44 store with counterfeit cash.

Secret Service informed the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office the serial numbers don't exist and that for every single bill possessed there are 1,000 others throughout 20 states.

Investigators have no idea how much money was taken out of Baldwin County.

Capt. Brad King of the Baldwin County Sheriff's Department said the Milledgeville Police Department handled the initial response at Walmart. The county is working with the Secret Service as the bills are identified.

“This stuff has the watermark, the hologram, the magnetic strip, and the fibers in the paper. It is unbelievably good money,” King said.

The $100 bills will pass a marking test and go through a money counter. The bank noticed a minor tactile difference.

The black male suspect is believed to be from the Atlanta area, according to King. Surveillance video shows him driving a small, silver car that could be a Nissan Maxima or a Lexus.

This kind of counterfeit operation is unprecedented.

“This is high-grade money,” King said. “All of the store owners and everybody needs to be aware.”
