CSH Reuse plan gaining traction

MILLEDGEVILLE — The positive buzz that has swirled around a proposal that would retrofit the Central State Hospital campus as a center for rural health care delivery and education continues to grow and plan advocate and Milledgeville city planner Mike Couch said Friday that the right people are continuing to show their support.

Recently, the task force behind the push met with representatives from Rosser International who helped develop the much-referenced Rosser master plan for Milledgeville and Baldwin County. The group also met with representatives from Lord, Aeck and Sargent, developers who transformed the former Tift College campus in Forsyth into the Georgia Corrections Academy.

In addition to the meeting to observe the process followed by the Tift College plan, local leaders met with the U.S. Economic Development Administration and are in the beginning phases of a project that may serve to establish a roadmap for the redevelopment of many of the aging structures on the campus.

The Walker Building, across from the Powell Building, is identified as the structure in the worst shape at the facility and a proposal is under consideration that would use the reconstruction of the building as a model for much of the redevelopment of the CSH campus for use as an extension of Georgia College’s health education programs and expand rural health care availability.
