Belle Foods files for Chapter 11

MILLEDGEVILLE — Belle Foods LLC recently announced that the company has filed a voluntary position for Chapter 11 business reorganization in U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

The announcement came Friday afternoon via a press release issued by the company.

According to the release, the “company will continue to operate in the ordinary course of business as ‘debtor-in-possession’ under the jurisdiction of the bankruptcy court.

The company has received bankruptcy court approval to use cash collateral, pay employee wages and benefits, and continue customer programs.

“The Company's bankruptcy filing represents a difficult time in the life of the Company, but the Company believes that it represents the best opportunity to reorganize its long-term debt, dispose of underperforming assets, and achieve lasting success. The Company is committed to its reorganization efforts, and looks forward to emerging as a leaner, stronger company in the very near future,” the release states.

Late last year, more than 50 Piggly Wiggly grocery store chains in the southeast, including the two locations in Milledgeville, were bought out by Belle Foods and underwent a name change.

The northside Piggly Wiggly began implementing new Belle Foods grocery bags and price labels soon after Thanksgiving.

Belle Foods is a family-owned neighborhood grocer with 57 stores in four southern states, originated by the father-son team of Bill and Jeff White. According to Belle Foods website, the company prides itself in providing great quality food, excellent customer service, and affordable prices in a clean, family-friendly environment.
