MILLEDGEVILLE — Eagle Ridge Elementary School is invites local students and families to learn about bicycle safety during its second annual Bike Day event this weekend.

“The whole purpose of the event is to encourage our students and families to come out and exercise their bodies and brains,” said Tonya Jarrett, fourth grade teacher serving as coordinator of the event. “I came up with the idea to implement Bike Day at the school as a way for all ages, including grandparents, parents, youth and the school, to come together and become one family. This is a great opportunity for families to communicate with school teachers as well.”

The event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Eagle Ridge. Families interested in participating must bring their own bicycles and helmets.

“We will have face painting, a group talk about bicycle safety and the appropriate equipment needed to be safe, a group talk about child seat safety, a health screening, obstacle courses based on age and grade levels, and concessions,” Jarrett said. “We had a good turnout last year and we’re expecting an even better turnout this year. We encourage all of the schools to come.”

Donated bicycles will also be given away through a raffle during the family fun event.

“We have about seven or more bikes we’re giving away based on participation,” Jarrett said.

For more information about Saturday’s Bike Day event, or to make a contribution, call Eagle Ridge at (478) 457-2967.

“Eagle Ridge is committed to making sure our kids are performing academically, as well as doing all we can to make sure they are healthy, and moving our bodies and brains for excellence,” Jarrett said. “We want our school to become one community school and be able to work together to push academics and being healthy.”
